Chapter 7 - The Offshore Ledger

The rain beat a relentless, frantic rhythm against the windshield as Marcus’s car wove aggressively through the damp, midnight streets of the financial district. In the backseat, Sarah clutched her bruised arms, shivering from the cold, while Clara stared fixedly at the glowing screen of the encrypted flash drive resting in her palm.
"She’s transferring everything," Clara whispered, her voice tight with disbelief as the file directory scrolled rapidly past her eyes. "Not just the charity funds, Marcus. The real estate portfolios, the trust accounts, the hidden Swiss assets—she’s liquidating the entire Sterling estate holdings into cryptocurrency. By morning, the family accounts will be completely empty."
Marcus didn't blink. His jaw was set so tightly a muscle twitched in his cheek. "She’s running. She knows that once the SEC audits the foundation tomorrow, her signature on those forged wire transfers will land her in federal prison for the rest of her life. She’s trying to buy an exit out of the country."
"Where is she going?" Sarah asked from the back, her voice shaking slightly as she leaned forward between the front seats. "If she’s liquidating everything, she must have a private charter waiting somewhere remote."
"The private airfield at Eagle’s Ridge," Marcus said grimly, taking a sharp turn that threw them sideways against the car doors. "It’s an old airstrip owned by the Vance family trust. Completely off the radar. If she gets her jet into international airspace before we freeze the routing codes, we’ll never see those assets—or her—again."
Clara looked down at her swollen stomach, feeling a dull, persistent ache that reminded her of the violence she had barely escaped hours earlier. She placed a protective hand over her belly, her thoughts racing. Eleanor wasn't just a ruthless socialite anymore; she was a cornered animal with nothing left to lose. And a cornered animal was infinitely more dangerous.
"Marcus," Clara said quietly, her voice cutting through the roar of the engine. "When we get to the airstrip, she won't come quietly. She has armed security with her. You can't take them all on by yourself."
Marcus glanced over at her, his dark eyes softening for a fraction of a second before returning to the road. The streetlights flickered overhead, casting long, dramatic shadows across his sharp features. "I’m not planning on fighting an army, Clara. I’m planning on cutting off their communication array. Without satellite uplink, her pilot can't file a flight plan. The jet stays on the tarmac."
"And if she tries to use force?" Sarah asked nervously.
Marcus reached inside his jacket, his hand emerging with a heavy, matte-black firearm that he casually checked before sliding it into the holster beneath his arm. "Then she’ll learn why the Sterling family name used to be feared long before we ever bought our first bank."
Silence fell over the car as they left the city limits behind, the towering skyscrapers giving way to dense, dark pine forests that lined the winding mountain roads leading up to Eagle’s Ridge. The digital clock on the dashboard clicked over to 2:15 AM. They had less than an hour before Eleanor’s jet lifted off into the stormy night.

As the car rounded a sharp hairpin turn near the peak of the ridge, the perimeter fence of the private airfield came into view through the trees. But instead of total darkness, the tarmac was bathed in the harsh, blinding glare of floodlights, and a sleek, twin-engine private jet sat waiting at the end of the runway, its turbines already whining with a deafening, high-pitched roar.
