Chapter 11 - The Skyline Burn

The dull, thunderous boom rolled across the mountain ridge like an earthquake, shaking the very foundations of the airfield. On the distant horizon, a massive pillar of orange fire and billow of black smoke erupted into the stormy night sky, painting the clouds an ominous, bruised crimson. The downtown archives—the historical vault of the Sterling empire—were burning.
Eleanor stood frozen on the boarding stairs, the smoking remote control trembling in her manicured hand. Her eyes were wide with a mix of manic triumph and sudden, creeping dread as she watched the distant flames consume her family's legacy.
"You insane bitch," Marcus growled, stepping up the metal stairs with heavy, deliberate strides. He didn't care about the smoke on the horizon; his entire focus was locked onto the woman standing before him.
"It's over!" Eleanor screamed hysterically, backing away until she hit the cabin door. "The records are gone! The deeds are ashes! You can't prove I stole anything because the baseline ledgers no longer exist!"
Before Marcus could reach her, the sound of screeching tires echoed across the tarmac from the opposite side of the runway. Three black SUVs bearing federal law enforcement insignia burst through the secondary access gate, their blue and red emergency lights strobing frantically against the wet concrete. Heavily armed federal agents poured out of the vehicles, raising their rifles and shouting commands.
"FBI! Nobody move! Drop your weapons!" a voice boomed through a megaphone.
Eleanor’s face lit up with sudden, desperate hope. She threw her hands up, shouting toward the agents, "I am Eleanor Vance! I am the victim of a hostile corporate kidnapping! Arrest him! Arrest Marcus Sterling!"
The lead agent lowered his rifle slightly, looking between Marcus and Eleanor with furrowed brows. "Mr. Sterling? Stand down and put your hands behind your back."
Clara finally reached the base of the boarding stairs, panting heavily, clutching her swollen stomach as she fought for breath in the freezing rain. "Don't listen to her!" Clara shouted, her voice ringing out clearly over the whine of the jet turbines. She held up the encrypted flash drive in her hand. "She didn't burn the archives to hide the ledgers—she burned them to destroy the original land grants! But the data is already backed up on this drive. We transmitted it to the SEC twenty minutes ago!"
Eleanor’s jaw dropped in absolute horror. She spun around, frantically trying to open the cabin door of the private jet, but the automated lock clicked shut from the inside—her own pilot had locked her out to save himself from federal complicity.
Marcus stepped forward, ignoring the federal agents, and gently took Clara by the shoulders, pulling her away from the commotion. He looked down into her pale, exhausted face, his dark eyes filled with an overwhelming tide of emotion.
"You shouldn't have run out here," Marcus murmured, his voice thick with uncharacteristic vulnerability. "You could have lost the baby."

"I couldn't let her win," Clara whispered back, leaning her head against his broad chest as the federal agents finally swarmed the stairs and slapped the handcuffs onto Eleanor’s wrists, ending her reign of terror once and for all.
