Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Dark

The sterile hum of the private clinic’s monitor filled the dimly lit VIP room, providing a stark contrast to the chaos of the estate. Clara lay against crisp white pillows, an IV drip threaded into her bruised hand. The gash on her temple had been stitched and cleaned, and the fetal heart monitor beat with a steady, reassuring rhythm that echoed in the quiet space. Marcus sat rigidly in a leather armchair beside the bed, his dark suit jacket draped over the back, his sleeves rolled up to reveal dense, dark tattoos winding around his thick forearms.
"The baby is strong," Dr. Hayes said quietly, stepping away from the ultrasound machine and pulling off his latex gloves. He looked sternly at Marcus. "Given the blunt force trauma to her head and the severe abdominal stress, it’s a miracle she didn't miscarry. But she needs absolute bed rest. No stress, no travel, and definitely no heavy lifting. Who did this to her, Marcus?"
Marcus stared at the flickering screen, his jaw working as he clenched his teeth. "That’s none of your concern, Thomas. Just make sure she stays here under guard."
Clara opened her eyes, wincing as the bright light hit her retinas. She turned her head slowly, finding Marcus’s dark, intense gaze fixed on her. The memory of the hallway flashed behind her eyes—the blinding rage of Eleanor Vance, the crushing pain in her stomach, and the chilling realization that someone in this house wanted her and her unborn child erased.
"You shouldn't have brought me here," Clara whispered, her voice raspy and thin. "Eleanor... she knows who I am. She saw the necklace in my locker. That’s why she attacked me. She thinks I stole it from her dressing room."
Marcus leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his expression darkening like a gathering storm. "You didn't steal anything, Clara. I gave you that necklace. And Eleanor has no right to touch a single hair on your head, let alone threaten my child."
Clara froze, her breath catching in her throat. She looked at the man who had pulled her out of the jaws of violence, a man feared by half the corporate boardrooms in the city. The truth of their forbidden relationship was a tightly guarded secret, but the stakes were growing higher by the second.
"Your child," Clara repeated softly, her hand resting over her protruding belly. "If Eleanor finds out the truth about whose baby this is, she won't just fire me. She'll make sure neither of us ever leaves this city alive."
Marcus reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently wrapping around her small, cold hand. "Let her try. She has no idea what I’ve buried to keep you safe."

Before Clara could respond, a sharp knock echoed at the heavy oak door of the VIP suite. The door slowly clicked open, revealing a figure holding a sealed envelope addressed directly to Marcus, bearing the personal crest of the Vance family attorney.
