Chapter 5 - The Escape Route

The nurse’s warning hung in the air like a death sentence. Before Clara could process the horrific sight of the blood staining the young woman's collar, the sound of heavy boots rounding the corner echoed down the hallway. Time seemed to stretch, every second expanding into an eternity of pure, raw survival instinct.
"Move! Now!" the nurse gasped, grabbing Clara by the arm and dragging her toward the large bathroom attached to the VIP suite.
They scrambled inside just as the heavy oak door of the hospital room was kicked wide open with a deafening crash. Heavy footsteps thudded across the tile floor, accompanied by the cold, clipped tones of professional killers sweeping the room. Clara held her breath, pressing her back against the tiled bathroom wall while her hands instinctively shielded her protruding belly.
"Bed's empty. IV is still warm," a deep voice growled from the bedroom. "They couldn't have gotten far. Check the perimeter!"
Inside the cramped bathroom, Clara and the nurse stood frozen in the dark. The nurse—whose name tag read Sarah—was hyperventilating, her fingers clawing frantically at her own arms to keep from screaming. Clara reached out, gripping Sarah’s trembling hand in a tight, grounding squeeze.
"How did you get past them?" Clara whispered, her lips brushing against Sarah’s ear.
"I was bringing the midnight medication trolley," Sarah whispered back, tears cutting tracks through the dust on her cheeks. "I saw two men in tactical gear standing over Marcus’s guards. They... they didn't look like they were breathing, Clara. I dropped the tray and ran straight for your room."
Clara’s heart dropped into her stomach. Marcus’s best men, elite operatives trained in urban warfare, taken out without a single gunshot being fired? That meant whoever was pulling the strings had breached the highest levels of security within the city's private medical network. Eleanor Vance had far more dangerous allies than they had ever anticipated.
"We can't stay here," Clara said, her voice hardening with sudden, fierce resolve. "If we go out the window, how do we get down?"
Sarah pointed to a maintenance ladder attached to the exterior wall, illuminated faintly by the red glow of a fire exit sign flickering through the frosted glass of the small vent. "It leads down to the laundry loading dock. My car is parked right by the exit gate. But we have to move before they clear the bathrooms."
Clara nodded. She adjusted her hospital gown, tying the loose strings tightly around her waist to give her abdomen some support. Every muscle in her body ached from the trauma of the previous hours, but the fierce desire to protect her child drowned out the physical pain.
Sarah pushed open the frosted glass vent, the hinges creaking slightly in the cold night air. The bitter wind rushed in, carrying the scent of rain and exhaust fumes. Sarah slipped through first, her small frame disappearing into the shadows of the fire escape. Clara took a deep breath, braced her hands against the cold metal frame, and hoisted herself out into the open air.

As she dropped down onto the metal grating of the fire escape, a loud crash echoed from inside the room they had just left. The bathroom door was kicked open, and a flashlight beam cut through the darkness, sweeping across the empty space and locking directly onto the open window frame just inches above Clara’s head.
