Chapter 8 - Breach at Eagle's Ridge

The car crunched to a halt behind a dense thicket of pine trees just fifty yards from the perimeter fence of the Eagle’s Ridge airfield. The blinding glare of the runway floodlights washed over the chain-link barrier, casting long, jagged shadows across the wet grass. Fifty feet away, the sleek fuselage of the private jet gleamed under the lights, its twin turbines spinning with a deafening whine that vibrated through the floorboards of the car.

"Stay here," Marcus commanded, killing the engine and plunging the interior into sudden, eerie silence save for the drumming of the rain on the roof.

"Marcus, no," Clara protested, reaching out to grab his sleeve. "There are at least four armed guards patrolling the perimeter gate. If you go out there alone, they’ll cut you down before you even reach the fence."

Marcus turned his head, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that brooked no argument. He reached up, gently covering her hand with his large, warm palm. "If I stay here, we lose everything we’ve built—and more importantly, we lose our future. Trust me, Clara. I’ve survived worse than a few corporate thugs."

Before Clara could say another word, Marcus pushed open his door and stepped out into the freezing rain. He moved with the silent, predatory grace of a ghost, hugging the shadows of the pine trees until he melted completely into the darkness near the perimeter fence.

"Is he crazy?" Sarah breathed from the backseat, pressing her face against the side window. "That’s a suicide mission!"

Clara didn't answer. Her eyes were glued to the airfield gate, where two guards in tactical gear paced slowly with assault rifles slung across their chests. Through the jet’s open boarding stairs, a familiar, elegant figure stepped out onto the metal platform. Eleanor Vance stood wrapped in a heavy white cashmere coat, her diamond earrings catching the harsh floodlights as she screamed instructions into a satellite phone, her face twisted in a mask of manic panic.

Suddenly, a sharp crack echoed across the tarmac.

It wasn't a gunshot. It was the heavy metal transformer box near the perimeter fence exploding in a shower of brilliant blue sparks. The entire airfield plunged into sudden, pitch-black darkness as the floodlights died instantly, leaving only the dull red anti-collision beacon atop the jet’s tail blinking rhythmically against the stormy sky.

Chaos erupted on the tarmac. Shouting voices bounced off the corrugated metal hangars as the guards scrambled in the dark, their flashlights sweeping wildly across the wet concrete.

From the shadows near the hangar, a dark figure moved with terrifying speed. Two quick, muffled thuds echoed across the open space, followed by the sound of bodies hitting the concrete. Marcus had neutralized the first two guards without firing a single shot.

Clara gripped the dashboard, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Through the windshield, she saw Marcus emerge directly beneath the wing of the private jet, his tall silhouette blocking the boarding stairs just as Eleanor turned around in sheer terror, dropping her satellite phone as she stared face-to-face with the man she thought she had already destroyed.
