Chapter 8 - The Library Archive

The heavy oak doors of the private library groaned as Elena slipped inside, the brass key clutched tightly in her palm. The room smelled of old leather, pipe tobacco, and impending ruin. Outside, the distant shouting of security guards mingling with the unknown intruders created a low, constant hum of panic.

She navigated the familiar path toward the back of the room, her bare feet making no sound on the thick Persian rug. The massive stone fireplace loomed before her, its cold hearth dark and empty.

According to Julian, the compartment was hidden behind the carved mahogany relief of the Sterling family crest above the mantel. Elena reached up, her fingers tracing the intricate wooden scrollwork until she found a subtle, spring-loaded toggle shaped like an oak leaf. She pressed it.

With a soft, pneumatic hiss, the heavy wood paneling swung outward, revealing a dark recess set deep into the stone wall. Inside sat a single, leather-bound ledger covered in a thick layer of dust, and beside it, a modern encrypted flash drive bearing the exact same logo as the app on Chloe's phone.

Elena reached inside, her fingers brushing the cold leather of the ledger. But before she could pull it out, a heavy hand landed flat against the library door, pushing it wide open.

"There she is," a cold, unfamiliar voice drawled from the doorway.

Elena froze, her hand still trapped inside the secret wall compartment. She slowly turned her head to see a tall man in a tactical dark uniform stepping into the room. He wasn't wearing a ski mask; his face was entirely exposed, sporting a jagged scar running from his jawline up to his ear. It was a face that belonged to a professional killer, not a corporate operative.

"Smart girl," the man smiled, tapping the suppressor on the short-barreled rifle he held loosely in his right hand. "Your father thought he could hide his past behind brick and mortar. Hand over the drive, Ms. Sterling, and maybe you get to walk out of this mansion alive."

May you like

Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs. She looked at the flash drive, then back at the scarred man, realizing that Julian hadn't been exaggerating at all.
