Chapter 13 - The Voice from the Past

The gravelly, tired voice of a man long thought dead echoed off the cold concrete walls of the basement, freezing Arthur in his tracks.

"If you're listening to this recording, Arthur, it means the fail-safe has been triggered," the voice of Thomas Vance rang out clearly from Chloe's device. "You thought you buried me under the old foundation, but men like us leave paper trails even when we burn the books."

Arthur dropped the revolver. It hit the floor with a heavy, metallic clatter that seemed to shatter the last remaining illusions of the Sterling dynasty. He sank down onto an overturned laundry crate, burying his face in his blood-stained hands, his shoulders shaking with silent, dry sobs.

"Thomas..." Arthur choked out the name like a curse and a prayer combined. "He... he said he was dead. The syndicate told me they took care of him."

"The syndicate didn't kill him, Arthur. They hid him," Chloe said, stopping just a few feet away from the broken patriarch. She tapped her screen, stopping the audio playback. "Your corporate partners weren't saints, but they didn't deserve to be framed for federal crimes and erased from history so you could keep the primary shares."

Elena stood frozen between her father and the mysterious auditor, her entire world collapsing into dust. The engagement gala, the multi-million dollar mergers, the elite status she had worn like armor her entire life—it was all built on a foundation of blood and lies.

"Why are you doing this?" Elena whispered, looking at Chloe with a mixture of fear and profound exhaustion. "If my father's empire is gone, what happens to us? What happens to the people who depend on the company for their livelihoods?"

"The company isn't going to die, Elena," Chloe said softly, her expression softening for the first time all evening. "The shell corporation is finished, yes. Your father will stand trial for fraud and conspiracy. But the assets acquired legally over the last decade are being restructured under a new trust—one managed by the surviving families."

Before Elena could ask whose name was on that new trust, heavy footsteps echoed down the basement stairs once again. But this time, they weren't the tactical boots of mercenaries.
