Chapter 7 - Secrets Beneath the Floorboards

"What are you talking about?" Elena hissed, wrenching her face away from Julian’s hand as her eyes slowly adjusted to the gloom of the stair alcove. The emergency strobe light swept across the cracks in the wooden wainscoting, painting Julian’s pale face in stark white relief. "You were just outside conspiring with our rivals! Don't pretend you're protecting me."
"I was buying time," Julian whispered back, his chest heaving as he kept his weight pressed against the concealed door of the alcove. "The people my family dealt with—they aren't corporate raiders, Elena. They're syndicates. Your father didn't just step on toes to build the Sterling legacy; he buried bodies. Literally."
Elena stared at him, the weight of the red ring box in her pocket feeling less like a symbol of a failed engagement and more like a lead weight. "You're lying. My father is a businessman, not a monster."
"Ask him about the winter of 2012," Julian shot back bitterly, his eyes darting toward the outer hallway where heavy footsteps were now marching past the base of the stairs. "Ask him what happened to the original partners of Sterling Logistics before they signed over their shares. Why do you think I tried to pull you out of this before it blew up?"
Outside the alcove, the sharp click of tactical boots on marble grew closer.
"Clear the ground floor!" a deep, electronically distorted voice ordered. "Check the perimeter studios and the master office. If Arthur Sterling tries to access the physical archive, terminate the feed."
Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs. The men outside weren't common burglars or corporate spies. They moved with military precision, their communications gear humming with encrypted frequencies.
Julian slowly reached into his inner pocket, his movements agonizingly deliberate. He pulled out a small, heavy brass key with a notched head that Elena had never seen before.
"This opens the floor safe in the study," Julian murmured, pressing the key into her cold hand. "Your father thinks he hid the original incorporation deeds there. But the real documents—the ones that prove whose signatures were forged—are inside a compartment behind the library fireplace. You need to get them before the guards find the archive."

Elena looked down at the brass key, then up at Julian’s desperate, bloodshot eyes, realizing with a sickening jolt that she was completely alone in a war she never knew existed.
