Chapter 12 - The Patriarch's Confession

"Elena!" Arthur shouted, his voice cracking with a mix of fierce relief and desperate paranoia as he spotted his daughter standing among the laundry piles. He swept the room with the barrel of the gun until his eyes locked onto Chloe. "Stay away from her!"

"Dad, stop!" Elena yelled, stepping directly between Arthur and Chloe. "Put the gun down. It's over. The federal agents are already upstairs, and your security team sold you out."

Arthur stopped dead in his tracks, the heavy revolver shaking in his grip. He looked at his daughter—at the ruined beige dress, the bruised skin, the sheer exhaustion in her eyes—and for the first time in her life, Elena saw her father look like an old, broken man.

"You went into the library archive," Arthur whispered, his voice hollow. "You found the ledger."

"I found the truth," Elena answered, her voice steady despite the tears welling in her eyes. "You didn't build this family on vision, Dad. You built it on stolen shares, forged signatures, and ruined lives. Julian was right about you."

Arthur flinched as if he had been physically struck. He lowered the barrel of the gun slightly, staring at the concrete floor. "I did what I had to do to survive," he muttered defensively, his voice trembling. "When we started Sterling Logistics, we had nothing. The others wanted to sell out to the syndicates on day one. If I hadn't forged those documents, we would all be dead in a ditch somewhere."

"And what about the partners who disappeared?" Chloe stepped out from the shadow of the crates, her voice cutting through the damp basement air like a scalpel. "The ones whose families were told it was a tragic boating accident in 2012? Did you have to kill them to survive too, Arthur?"

Arthur whipped his head around, his eyes blazing with sudden, frantic rage. "Shut up! You don't know anything about what we faced!"

"I know everything," Chloe replied calmly, reaching into her silver clutch and pulling out her own device. She pressed a single button, and a recorded phone call began to play aloud through the basement speakers.

It was the voice of a man Arthur hadn't heard in over a decade—his former primary partner, presumed dead for twelve years.
