Chapter 14 - The Final Reckoning

The harsh white light of the basement entrance illuminated a row of federal agents in standard windbreakers, led by a tall, silver-haired woman carrying a leather binder. Behind her walked Thomas Vance—older, weathered, and scarred, but undeniably alive.

Arthur slowly lifted his head, staring across the damp concrete at the man he had betrayed twelve years ago.

Thomas stopped ten feet away, his expression remarkably devoid of malice. There was only a heavy, profound weariness in his eyes. "Hello, Arthur," Thomas said quietly. "It's been a long time."

"You're... you're supposed to be gone," Arthur whispered, his voice cracking.

"I was," Thomas replied, gesturing slightly toward Chloe. "Until Chloe and her team tracked down the offshore ledger you thought you hid in the Cayman accounts. You built a prison out of gold, Arthur, and you locked yourself inside it."

The federal agents moved forward methodically. Two of them flanked Arthur, their hands resting respectfully but firmly on his shoulders as they read him his rights. There was no struggle, no dramatic shouting. The Sterling patriarch simply nodded, offering no resistance as the steel cuffs clicked around his wrists. He looked once at Elena, his eyes full of a silent, helpless plea for forgiveness that came a decade too late.

Elena didn't move. She stood among the ruined shreds of her beige dress, watching her father being led away into the bright lights of the upper hallway, leaving behind an empire built on sand.

Thomas waited until the agents had cleared the lower room before walking over to stand beside Chloe. He looked down at Elena with a gentle, paternal warmth that felt deeply unsettling.

"You didn't know, did you, Elena?" Thomas asked softly.

Elena shook her head slowly, her voice barely a whisper. "I didn't know anything."

"Good," Thomas said, pulling a small, clean manila envelope from his leather binder and extending it toward her. "Because what happens next is entirely up to you."
