Chapter 6 - Darkness in the Mansion

The brilliant crystal chandeliers flickered once, twice, and then extinguished entirely, plunging the grand foyer and the sprawling ballroom into a suffocating, pitch-black silence. A collective intake of breath rippled through the hundreds of elite guests trapped inside, followed by the immediate scratch of static over the emergency intercom.

Elena stood frozen on the staircase, the small red ring box clenched so tightly in her fist that the edges bit into her palm. "Dad?" she called out into the dark, her voice trembling slightly. "Dad, where are you?"

"Stay where you are, Elena," Arthur’s voice boomed from the terrace threshold, sharp and commanding, though underlying it was a rare note of genuine anxiety. "Security, get the auxiliary generators online now!"

Before the command could echo away, the heavy sound of a gunshot cracked through the night air from the direction of the rear gardens.

In the sudden flash of light provided by a distant security strobe sweeping across the high stained-glass windows, Elena saw something that made her blood run cold. Just feet away on the staircase, the space where Chloe had been standing a second ago was completely empty. The mysterious blonde had vanished into the shadows without a sound, leaving behind only the faint scent of expensive French perfume and a single, torn shred of silver metallic fabric snagged on the polished wooden banister.

"Chloe?" Elena whispered, taking a blind step downward, her bare feet brushing against the cold marble.

Suddenly, a heavy hand clamped over her mouth. A strong arm wrapped around her waist, yanking her backward into the recessed alcove beneath the grand staircase—a dark, forgotten space smelling of old dust and velvet storage trunks.

Elena tried to scream, biting down hard against the palm covering her lips, but a familiar, urgent whisper hissed in her ear.

"Be quiet if you want to live," Julian’s voice whispered, his breath hot and frantic against her neck. "They aren't here for your father's money, Elena. They're here for the ledger in the floor safe."
