Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Alliance

"Business?" Arthur stepped onto the terrace, his shadow falling heavily over Julian. "Is that what you call conspiring with my bitterest corporate rival to gut the Sterling empire from the inside out?"

Julian’s forced smile vanished, replaced by a hard, calculating glint. He slipped the phone into his jacket pocket and stood his ground, shedding the persona of the charming fiancé entirely. "You built this company on the backs of broken partnerships, Arthur. Don't act so surprised when someone plays the same game better than you do."

Inside the grand foyer, Elena remained rooted to the stairs. The world around her felt entirely hollow. She looked down at her hands, still trembling from the confrontation with Chloe, and realized how blind she had been. Every warning her father had given her about men like Julian, every cold-hearted business dinner she had sat through—she had dismissed it all for the sake of a fairy tale ending that never existed.

Chloe walked slowly up the stairs, stopping two steps below Elena. She reached down, picked up the small red ring box, and extended it upward.

"You dropped this," Chloe said quietly. Her voice lacked the hostility it had held minutes before. There was a strange, heavy weariness in her tone.

Elena slowly accepted the box, her fingers brushing against Chloe’s cool skin. "Who are you?" Elena whispered, the fight entirely drained from her voice. "Why did you ruin my dress? Why are you helping us?"

Chloe didn't answer immediately. She turned her gaze out toward the terrace, watching as Arthur shoved Julian against the stone balustrade, security guards finally pouring out from the side corridors to intervene.

"I didn't ruin your dress because I hate you, Elena," Chloe said, her eyes fixed on the chaotic scene outside. "I ruined it because it was the only way to make you stop long enough to see the truth. Your father didn't build this family on gold. He built it on stolen secrets. And Julian was just the latest wolf to figure out how to open the door."

Before Elena could process the staggering implication of those words, the mansion's main power grid suddenly surged and died, plunging the entire estate into absolute darkness.
