Chapter 11 - The Free Fall

The metal chute was slick, cold, and dangerously steep. Elena tumbled downward in a chaotic blur of bruised elbows and tearing fabric, the beige gown shredding completely against the riveted interior seams until she was sliding in a tangle of ruined silk and tulle.

With a sudden, violent thud, she burst out of the lower chute opening, slamming hard onto a massive pile of discarded linens stacked inside the mansion's vast basement laundry room. The impact knocked the wind completely out of her lungs, leaving her gasping for air on the damp concrete floor.

She lay there for a long moment, staring up at the dark iron mouth of the chute high above, listening for the sound of pursuit. The mansion above was entirely silent now, save for the low, rhythmic hum of the auxiliary generators that had finally kicked in, casting a sickly yellow light across the rows of industrial washing machines.

Slowly, painfully, Elena pushed herself up. Her knees were scraped raw, her exquisite off-shoulder beige gown was little more than a pile of ruined rags, and her pearl earrings were completely gone. But her hand was still clenched around the flash drive.

"I see you survived the drop," a calm, familiar voice murmured from the shadows near the boiler room door.

Elena flinched, spinning around to find Chloe leaning against a stack of detergent crates. The blonde woman’s silver metallic gown was remarkably pristine, untouched by the chaos, the smoke, or the blood of the night. She was holding a small cup of water, watching Elena with an expression that was entirely unreadable.

"You," Elena breathed out, clutching the flash drive to her chest. "You knew about the tunnel. You knew about the ledger. Who the hell are you working for, Chloe? Are you with the syndicate, or are you just another vulture waiting to pick the bones of my family's empire?"

Chloe took a slow sip of water, her blue eyes reflecting the flickering yellow light of the overhead fluorescent bulb. "I'm not a vulture, Elena. I'm an auditor. And the client who hired me isn't interested in your father's money."

Before Chloe could elaborate, the heavy steel door at the top of the basement stairs was kicked open with a thunderous crash, and Arthur Sterling stumbled down into the room, his black suit ruined, blood staining his white shirt collar, holding a heavy silver revolver in his trembling hand.
