Chapter 4 - Echoes on the Terrace

The voice of Julian filled the cavernous hall, bouncing off the marble floors and high vaulted ceilings. The elite guests in the ballroom began to murmur, their silhouettes visible through the frosted glass of the terrace doors.
"...as soon as old man Sterling signs over the primary shares, we liquidate everything and leave Elena holding an empty shell," Julian’s voice continued, crisp and utterly devoid of affection.
Elena stood frozen on the stairs, the red velvet ring box slipping from her numb fingers. It hit the marble step with a dull thud, bouncing once before rolling down to rest against her father’s polished black shoe. She stared at the glass doors, her mind refusing to process the words she was hearing. All the late-night planning, the curated elegance of the engagement gala, the whispered promises under the stars—all of it laid bare as a calculated fraud.
Arthur didn't look at the fallen box. His face was a mask of furious realization. He strode past Chloe without another word, his shoulder brushing hers, and reached out to grip the heavy brass handle of the terrace door. With a violent jerk, he pulled it open.
The cool night air rushed in, carrying the scent of rain and expensive cigars. Julian stood near the stone balustrade, a phone pressed to his ear, his tuxedo jacket slightly rumpled. He froze as the bright light of the mansion spilled over the flagstones, illuminating the pale shock on his face.
"Julian," Arthur’s voice was lethal, carrying across the quiet terrace like a whip-crack.
Julian slowly lowered the phone, his eyes darting toward the open door where Elena stood, a tragic figure in her ruined beige gown, staring at him with hollow eyes.

"Arthur," Julian forced a strained, nervous smile, taking a step backward. "You're missing the party. We were just... discussing business."
