Chapter 1 - The Escalation on the Grand Staircase
"What do you think you're doing? You shouldn't be wearing something this expensive!" Elena’s voice cut through the cavernous marble foyer like broken glass.
"You had no right to touch my dress. You act like you're the most important person here," Elena snapped, her dark hair sweeping over her bare shoulder as she spun back down the second-tier landing.
Below them, the champagne flutes stopped clinking. Chloe stood in her shimmering silver metallic gown, the rhinestones catching the chandelier light. She looked down at the hem where the beige tulle was viciously shredded.
"It was an accident," Chloe murmured, her voice steady and infuriatingly cool.
"Accident?" Elena’s fingers dug into the small red velvet ring box she clutched like a weapon. With a sharp, ugly rip, she tore another strip of the beige fabric from her own skirt, letting it flutter down to the Persian rug. "You ruined my engagement night, Chloe. And you think you can just stand there?"
Heavy footsteps echoed from the upper gallery. Arthur Sterling descended into the light, his black suit immaculate, his face a mask of calculated fury.
"Who did that?" Arthur demanded, stepping squarely between the two young women. His gaze locked onto the silver-clad intruder. "Did you damage my daughter's dress and insult her?"
Chloe gasped, taking half a step back against the carved mahogany balustrade. "It was an accident!" she repeated, her eyes darting frantically toward the gallery shadows.
"Apologize," Arthur ordered, his voice dropping an octave, carrying the terrifying weight of a patriarch who owned half the city's financial district.
Chloe parted her lips to speak, but before the words could form, a sharp chime echoed from her small beaded clutch. It was not a standard ringtone, but a distinct, mechanical notification sound.
