Chapter 9 - The Intruder in the Shadows

The beam of Victor’s tactical flashlight swept across the dark, wood-paneled walls of the service corridor as he moved with silent, deliberate speed. Every step in his polished leather shoes was calculated to make zero sound against the floorboards. The distant sounds of the security team shouting orders downstairs provided a chaotic backdrop to the heavy silence of the upper wing.

Victor rounded the corner toward the private elevator lobby, his hand resting instinctively inside his jacket where a compact legal firearm remained tucked in a concealed holster. The air here smelled faintly of ozone and warm copper—the unmistakable scent of a high-voltage electrical bypass panel being forced open.

A sudden flash of movement caught the edge of his flashlight beam.

A figure clad entirely in black tactical gear dashed past the open doorway of the linen closet, heading directly toward the private residential wing where the master nursery and the panic room were located.

"Stop right there!" Victor shouted, his voice echoing menacingly down the corridor as he broke into a fast, aggressive sprint.

The intruder didn't slow down. Instead, the figure rounded the corner toward the East Wing, moving with terrifying agility and familiarity with the mansion's labyrinthine layout. Victor pursued relentlessly, his long strides eating up the distance between them. He knew every turn of this hallway by heart, a home-court advantage that would allow him to cut off the intruder's escape route before they reached the nursery.

Victor veered left through the servants' pantry, taking a shortcut that bypassed the main hallway junction. He burst out through the swinging service doors just as the intruder was passing the entrance to the East Wing corridor.

With a flying tackle, Victor slammed his full weight into the figure, driving them both hard against the reinforced drywall. A muffled grunt escaped the intruder's lips as the impact rattled the picture frames on the wall.

Victor pinned the masked figure against the wall with one forearm pressed tightly across their chest, using his other hand to violently rip the black ski mask off their face. The flashlight beam illuminated the features beneath, and Victor’s breath caught in his throat.

It wasn't a hired mercenary or an anonymous corporate spy. It was Marcus’s lead assistant, a man Victor had trusted with his most sensitive security protocols for over five years.

"You?" Victor snarled, his grip tightening. "You sold us out from the inside?"

The young man didn't flinch. Instead, a bloody, defiant smile spread across his bruised lips as he stared up at his boss with dead, unblinking eyes.
