Chapter 6 - The Hidden Ledger

The mention of the financial files seemed to drain all the fight out of Clara in a single second. Her shoulders slumped, and her frantic struggling ceased, leaving only heavy, ragged breaths echoing in the grand foyer. The security guards exchanged cautious glances, maintaining their grip just in case her sudden submission was a trick.

Victor stepped back, signaling the guards with a subtle tilt of his head to loosen their hold slightly. Clara staggered forward, catching herself against the edge of a mahogany console table. She didn't look at the guards, nor did she scream anymore; instead, her eyes locked onto Victor with a chilling, desperate calculation.

"You looked through the offshore accounts," Clara said, her voice dropping to a trembling whisper that barely carried over the silence of the hall. "You found the transfers to Zurich."

"I found much more than Zurich, Clara," Victor replied evenly, adjusting the cuffs of his black shirt. "I found a paper trail leading directly to the liquidation of my mother's trust fund, systemic embezzlement from the Sterling Foundation, and communications with my primary corporate rivals offering proprietary shipping schedules. Treason on every conceivable level."

Elena watched from the doorway, her breath catching in her throat. The magnitude of Clara’s betrayal was staggering, transforming a simple domestic dispute into a massive corporate and criminal conspiracy. She shifted the sleeping baby slightly, ensuring he remained undisturbed by the dark revelations unfolding outside.

Clara’s lips trembled into a bitter, humorless smile. She wiped a stray strand of hair from her forehead, her posture subtly shifting from panic back to a cold, calculating defiance. "You think you’re so untouchable, Victor. You think because you hold the cards tonight, you’ve won the whole game."

"It's not a game, Clara. It's a reckoning," Victor stated, his hand resting casually over the heavy black stone ring on his finger.

"If I go down, I am taking your precious corporate empire down with me," Clara hissed, her voice rising just enough for the security guards to tense again. "Every single shadow partner, every secret backdoor deal we made to secure the municipal contracts last year—I have physical copies stored in a safety deposit box that opens automatically if I don't check in by tomorrow noon."

Victor’s eyes narrowed. The air in the hallway grew tense once more, the stakes escalating from a private marital feud into a threat against the very foundation of the Sterling conglomerate.

"You're bluffing," Victor said, though a cold seed of doubt had just been planted in his mind.

"Am I?" Clara challenged, stepping closer despite the guards. "Try me, Victor. Send me away tonight, and watch your stock price plummet before the opening bell rings tomorrow morning."

Before Victor could answer, his personal smartphone—stored securely in his inner jacket pocket—began to vibrate persistently with an emergency priority ringtone that signaled a critical system breach at corporate headquarters.
