Chapter 3 - The Desk of Judgment

The heavy oak doors of the private study clicked shut, sealing out the echoes of the mansion's chaos. Victor stood alone beside his mahogany desk, the dim amber desk lamp casting long, dramatic shadows across the room. He looked down slowly at a thick stack of financial documents and legal briefs spread out before him, their pages detailing months of suspicious expenditures and hidden accounts that bore Clara’s signature.

On his finger, the heavy black stone ring caught the warm light every time his hand shifted. The deep emotional tension in the room was palpable, heavy enough to make breathing feel like a deliberate chore. Victor raised his phone to his ear, listening to the persistent ringing on the other end of the line as Clara tried desperately to break through his defenses from the hallway outside.

The muffled pounding on the heavy wood of the study door began, accompanied by Clara’s frantic, muffled pleas for him to open up and listen to her side of the story. Victor ignored the noise entirely, keeping his gaze locked on the incriminating documents that proved her betrayal went far beyond cruelty to a child.

"Victor, please!" Clara’s voice filtered through the thick panels, thin and desperate. "You can't just shut me out like this! At least let me explain why I was stressed! The pressure of this family is too much!"

Victor didn't blink. He lowered the phone slightly, his voice dropping into an arctic register that carried easily through the heavy door.

"Stay away from my son," Victor said coldly into the receiver, knowing she was standing just on the other side. "If you come within a mile of him again, I won't just file for divorce. I will ensure every single asset you ever laid claim to is stripped away before the sun rises."

The pounding on the door stopped abruptly. The silence that followed was heavy, pregnant with the dangerous realization that Clara’s reign of intimidation in this house had officially come to an end. Victor ended the call, cutting the connection with a sharp swipe of his thumb.

He picked up a red pen, hovering it over the signature line of the custody restraining order. His hands were steady, forged by years of ruthless corporate warfare, but a muscle in his jaw twitched violently as he thought of his helpless baby boy left in the care of a monster for far too long.

A soft knock interrupted his thoughts, much lighter and more hesitant than Clara's violent blows. The door creaked open an inch.
