Chapter 1 - The Echo of a Cruel Footstep

The polished marble floor of the luxury mansion hallway offered no warmth to the infant crying against its hard surface. Clara stood in her vibrant blue long-sleeved dress, her expression hardened into a mask of cold entitlement as she looked down at the tiny bundle. The baby, dressed in a soft beige onesie, struggled and wailed in distress, his small hands grasping futilely at the air.
"Let him go!" Clara snapped, her voice cutting through the hollow acoustics of the expansive corridor like shattered glass. "Don't touch him again. Give him to me."
Elena, the young maid in her crisp gray uniform and white apron, had already rushed forward to cradle the infant against her chest. Elena stumbled backward under Clara’s aggressive shove, hitting the cold floor hard, yet she managed to keep the baby safe in her arms.
Clara towered over the fallen maid, her black high heels clicking sharply against the stone as she stepped forward to snatch the child back.
"You have no right to interfere in my household management," Clara hissed, her fingers digging cruelly into the fabric of the baby's onesie. "He is mine to discipline and mine to raise as I see fit. Get out of my sight before I ensure you never work another day in this city."
Elena looked up, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and profound defiance. "He’s just a baby, Mrs. Sterling. You can't treat an innocent child this way."
"Silence!" Clara barked, her chest heaving beneath the bright blue silk. "You are nothing more domestic help. Know your place."
Before Elena could respond, the heavy front doors of the mansion swung open with a resounding thud. Victor Sterling strode into the foyer, his tall frame clad in a sharply tailored black suit, a black shirt, and a dark tie. He was flanked by two stoic security guards, their expressions grim. On Victor’s right hand, the heavy ring set with a single, multifaceted black stone caught the dim light of the entryway.
Victor froze, his sharp gaze locking onto the scene before him. The air in the hallway instantly grew heavy with tension, freezing every movement.
"Clara," Victor’s voice was dangerously low, carrying across the silent hall. "Explain what I am looking at right now."

Clara’s face drained of color, her haughty demeanor fracturing instantly as she realized the depth of the trap she had just walked into.
