Chapter 8 - Darkness in the Mansion

The sudden blackout threw the grand foyer into immediate confusion. The emergency lighting strips cast an eerie, blood-orange glow along the marble baseboards, painting long, distorted shadows across the walls. Clara gasped as the sudden loss of visibility disrupted her composure, while the security guards immediately shifted into defensive stances, hands dropping toward their tactical belts.
"Stay calm, secure your positions," Victor’s voice rang out, steady and commanding in the dark. He reached into his suit jacket, pulling out a small tactical flashlight and clicking it on. The bright beam cut through the dimness, illuminating Clara’s startled face.
Elena, standing near the doorway of the study with the sleeping baby, froze. The infant stirred slightly at the sudden drop in temperature and ambient light, letting out a soft whimper. Elena instinctively patted his back, murmuring soothingly in the dark.
"Mr. Sterling, the backup generator didn't kick in," one of the security guards reported, his voice tight with tension. "That wasn't a natural power failure. The main breaker box in the basement has been manually tripped."
Victor’s eyes narrowed. The blackout wasn't just a coincidence; it was part of a coordinated secondary phase to Clara’s corporate attack. While the data breach was happening upstairs in the digital realm, someone was downstairs tampering with the physical infrastructure of the estate.
"Secure the perimeter and lock down all access points to the East Wing," Victor ordered sharply, keeping the flashlight beam fixed on Clara. "Nobody enters or leaves this mansion until I find out who authorized access to the sub-basement."
Clara smirked in the beam of light, though her breathing remained shallow and nervous. "You can lock the doors all you want, Victor, but you can't stop what's already in motion. You think you're the only one who plans ahead?"
Before Victor could respond, a sharp, metallic screech echoed from somewhere deep within the mansion—the sound of a heavy security door being forced open from the outside.
"Sir! We’ve got movement at the rear service entrance," the lead security guard barked into his shoulder radio, his free hand unholstering a heavy tactical flashlight. "Intruders on the lower level!"
Victor’s jaw tightened. The threat was no longer abstract or legal; it had breached the physical perimeter of his home, putting his son and his staff in immediate danger. He looked from Clara to the dark corridor leading toward the service stairs, realizing with chilling clarity that Clara had accomplices waiting inside the estate.
"Guard her closely," Victor instructed the second security guard. He turned to Elena in the doorway. "Elena, take the baby and lock yourself inside the master panic room behind my study. Do not open that door for anyone—anyone—except me."

Elena nodded firmly, her fear overridden by the fierce instinct to protect the child in her arms. She turned swiftly, vanishing into the shadowed depths of the study just as a loud crash echoed from the back hallway, signaling that the intruders had breached the inner sanctum.
