Chapter 2 - The Digital Witness

Victor closed the distance between them with unnerving speed, his eyes fixed entirely on Clara’s face before shifting down to the frightened infant in Elena’s arms. The silence in the grand hallway was suffocating, broken only by the faint, exhausted sniffles of the baby in the beige onesie. Clara opened her mouth to speak, but the words caught in her throat as the lead security guard stepped forward.
Without a word, the guard raised a sleek smartphone, pressing play on a high-definition video file. The screen illuminated the dim hallway with a harsh, glaring light. Clear as day, the footage showed Clara aggressively dragging the crying infant across this exact marble floor just moments earlier, her face twisted in a cold, indifferent snarl. The audio captured the raw, terrified echoes of the baby’s helpless screams.
Clara stared at the glowing screen, her breath hitching as the undeniable evidence played out in front of everyone. Panic flared in her eyes, threatening to shatter her carefully constructed facade of perfection.
"She’s lying!" Clara shrieked, her voice cracking with sudden desperation as she pointed a trembling finger at the security guard. "That video is manipulated! Victor, you know me. You know these people are trying to turn you against me. You will believe me, not them!"
Victor did not flinch. He watched the final frames of the digital recording loop before looking back up at his wife. His dark eyes were utterly devoid of warmth, reflecting only a chilling realization that cut straight to the bone.
"The cameras in this hallway feed directly to my private server, Clara," Victor said, his tone dangerously calm. "There is no manipulation. There is only what you just chose to do when you thought no one was watching."
Elena slowly rose to her feet, still shielding the infant against her shoulder. She kept her gaze respectfully lowered, but her presence served as a constant reminder of the ugly truth Clara had just tried to bury.
Victor turned his back on his wife, signaling to his security team. "Take the child and Elena to the East Wing. Make sure they are looked after immediately."
"Victor, wait!" Clara lunged forward, her black high heels clicking frantically against the stone, but one of the guards stepped firmly into her path, blocking her way.
"Do not touch me," Clara spat, though her voice lacked its previous venom, replaced now by a rising tide of genuine terror.
Victor stopped at the threshold of his private study, sliding his hand into his pocket. He pulled out his phone, already dialing a number with mechanical precision. He didn't turn around as he delivered his final command to the room.

"Pack your bags, Clara," Victor said without looking back. "We are done."
