Chapter 9 - Sirens in the Driveway

The wail of the police sirens grew louder, cutting through the heavy night air and vibrating through the glass of the tall foyer windows. The red and blue flashing lights cast shifting geometric patterns of crimson and azure across the marble floor, painting the wreckage of the broken vase in surreal, violent hues.

Eleanor groaned louder from the floor, clutching her shoulder while glaring up at Maya with unadulterated venom. "Tell them... tell them she tried to murder me, Julian," the older woman wheezed, her voice dripping with malice. "Make sure they lock her away forever."

Julian didn't look down at his mother. His eyes remained locked on Maya, cold, calculating, and victorious. He slipped her phone back into his pocket, adjusting his black tie with practiced ease.

"The front gate is automated, Clara," Julian called out smoothly to the skeletal figure standing on the stairs. "When the police arrive, they will find you holding an iron weapon in a restricted corridor. Let’s see how well your story holds up against three years of medical records I forged in your absence."

Clara’s manic expression flickered, replaced for a fraction of a second by raw, human terror. She lowered the iron poker slightly, her chest heaving as the reality of Julian’s untouchable network finally sank in. He had thought of everything. He had bought judges, corrupted medical boards, and built a fortress of lies that no single victim could dismantle alone.

"You're a monster," Clara whispered, her voice cracking as a single tear traced a clean path down her soot-stained cheek.

"I'm a survivor, Clara. Just like Maya is about to learn," Julian replied smoothly.

Heavy pounding echoed from the front door, accompanied by a sharp, authoritative voice shouting from the porch. "Police! Open the door!"

Maya stood frozen against the wall, her mind racing at a million miles an hour. Julian had crafted the ultimate trap. If she opened the door, she would be thrown into a psychiatric ward before sunrise, silenced permanently just like Clara had been. But if she stayed silent, she would be trapped in this golden cage for the rest of her life.

As Julian stepped forward to unlock the heavy wood door for the arriving officers, Maya’s hand brushed against the pocket of her thick white knit sweater. Her fingers grazed something hard and rectangular—a small voice recorder she had slipped out of Julian’s study desk three weeks ago when she was still allowed to clean his office, before the isolation fully set in.

She had completely forgotten it was there.

Julian pulled the door open, putting on a masterful display of trembling, devastated vulnerability as the flashlights of two uniformed police officers cut through the entryway.

"Thank God you're here," Julian stammered, his voice cracking with rehearsed emotion. "My wife... she’s completely lost her mind. She attacked my mother and—"

"Don't listen to him!" Maya screamed, stepping forward into the beam of the police flashlights, pulling the small digital recorder from her pocket and holding it high in the air. "He's lying! Listen to the tape!"
