Chapter 11 - Shattered Evidence

The sickening crunch of the micro-SD card snapping beneath Julian’s shoe echoed loudly through the silent foyer. Maya stopped struggling against the officer holding her, her breath catching in her throat as she stared down at the ruined fragments of her only proof. Julian lifted his foot, a cold, triumphant smile returning to his lips as he straightened his black tie once more.
"See, Officer?" Julian said smoothly, his voice dripping with false concern. "She’s a danger to herself and everyone around her. She just destroyed family property in front of you."
The sergeant looked down at the crushed plastic and metal scattered across the marble floor, then back at Maya, whose chest heaving beneath her white knit sweater was the only sign of the absolute terror consuming her. The officer’s expression hardened with bureaucratic certainty. In the eyes of the law, Julian had played his hand perfectly. There was no physical evidence left, no witnesses willing to cross him except Clara, who was already being labeled by Julian as a clinically insane runaway.
"Ma'am, you're coming with us for a mandatory psychological evaluation," the sergeant announced, reaching for the pair of silver handcuffs dangling from his belt. "Stop resisting."
"You fools!" Clara shrieked from the stairs, raising the heavy iron poker once more as she descended rapidly toward the officers. "He killed our accountant! He laundered millions through the shell company! The ledger is in the study safe!"
"Get back, ma'am!" the second officer yelled, drawing his taser and aiming it directly at Clara’s chest as she charged down the wooden steps.
"No, don't!" Maya screamed, but it was too late.
A sharp crack filled the air, followed by a high-voltage electrical hiss. Clara’s body arched violently as the taser darts struck her chest, sending her tumbling down the remaining stairs in a crumpled heap of tattered gray rags. She hit the floor near Eleanor with a dull thud and lay completely still, her breathing shallow and ragged.
Julian watched the scene unfold with cold, detached satisfaction. He had won. The police had neutralized Clara, neutralized Maya, and secured the household under the guise of an emergency medical intervention.
"Thank you, officers," Julian said, offering a tight, polite nod. "I’ll handle the paperwork tomorrow morning. My legal team will ensure you are compensated for your trouble."
Maya was yanked toward the open front door, the cold night air hitting her face as the officers led her down the stone steps toward the flashing red and blue lights of the cruiser. She looked back one last time, catching Julian’s triumphant smirk framed in the doorway beneath the amber chandelier.
Just as the officer pushed her head down to guide her into the back seat of the police car, a heavy black SUV turned sharply into the driveway, its high-beam headlights blinding everyone in the courtyard. The passenger door swung open before the vehicle had even come to a complete stop, and a tall, sharp-featured woman in a dark trench coat stepped out, flashing a gold federal badge under the flashing lights.

"FBI, Special Agent Vance," the woman announced, her voice cutting through the sirens with absolute authority. "Step away from the suspect. Everyone freeze."
