Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Peace Offering

Julian stepped further into the guest suite, the silver tray catching the dim amber light of the single bedside lamp. He set the tray down on the mahogany table with a soft clatter, his eyes never leaving Maya’s face. He wore no jacket now, his white dress shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the lean, corded muscle of a man who spent his mornings in private boxing rings and his evenings dismantling lives.
"You didn't touch your water," Julian noted mildly, gesturing toward the small white pill resting beside the glass. "Take it, Maya. It will help you sleep. Tomorrow is a big day, and you need to look radiant for the board members coming to dinner."
Maya kept her distance, standing near the barred window with her arms crossed tightly over her white knit sweater. Her mind raced with the memory of Clara’s raspy voice echoing from the air vent. He will kill you just like he did the last one. The pill on the tray wasn't a sleeping aid; it was a sedative designed to keep her pliant, confused, and entirely manageable.
"I'm not tired, Julian," Maya said evenly, forcing her voice to remain steady despite the terror clawing at her stomach. "And I'm not taking anything you hand me."
Julian sighed, a theatrical expression of deep disappointment crossing his handsome features. He walked toward her slowly, his steps measured and deliberate, like a predator stalking cornered prey.
"You're making this difficult again, Maya," Julian murmured, stopping just a foot away from her. The faint scent of expensive cologne and scotch drifted off him. "You know what happens when you resist. Mom gets upset, I have to intervene, and things become unpleasant. Just take the pill. Let the fog roll in. It’s so much easier than fighting."
Maya looked deep into his eyes and saw nothing—no love, no remorse, only a terrifying void of calculated control.
"Where is Clara?" Maya asked abruptly.
Julian’s expression didn't change, but the air in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. The casual, patient facade flickered, replaced by a sudden, razor-sharp alertness. His jaw tightened, and the muscle in his cheek twitched once.
"What did you say?" Julian asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper.
"I asked about Clara," Maya repeated, holding her ground. "Your first wife. The one who supposedly ran off to Europe. How long are you going to keep pretending she abandoned you, Julian, when she’s starving in the walls of this house?"
Before Maya could blink, Julian’s hand shot out, grabbing her by the collar of her sweater and slamming her back against the barred window. The metal bars rattled violently against the brickwork. Julian’s face was inches from hers, his eyes burning with pure malice.
"Who has been talking to you?" Julian snarled, his calm demeanor completely shattered. "Tell me right now, or I swear to God you will never see the sun again."

Before Maya could answer, a loud, heavy crash echoed from the hallway outside the bedroom door, followed by Eleanor’s panicked shriek.
