Chapter 3 - The Missing Lifeline

The realization hit Maya like a physical blow. Her hands dropped slowly from the heavy front door, her fingers curling into tight fists against her sides. Six months. Julian and Eleanor had systematically chipped away at her entire life until she had no friends left, no job to go to, and an estranged sister living three time zones away who probably thought Maya simply didn't care anymore. The isolation wasn't an accident; it was an architecture designed by Julian’s brilliant, twisted mind.

"You cut me off," Maya whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the hallway refrigerator. She turned around to face him, her eyes wide with a terrifying new clarity. "You managed my accounts, you deleted my contacts, you told my family I needed privacy to recover from my 'exhaustion.' It was all a setup."

Julian tilted his head, a faint, condescending smile playing at the corners of his mouth. He looked every bit the successful corporate executive he was, completely untouchable in his tailored white shirt and dark trousers.

"We provided you with a life of absolute luxury, Maya," Julian replied, taking a slow step closer to her. "You didn't have to worry about bills, or stress, or the ugly realities of the real world. All you had to do was smile for the guests, keep your mouth shut, and play the part. But you ruined that tonight."

From the dining room, Eleanor emerged, her gray hair slightly disheveled but her posture rigid and unforgiving. She wiped a speck of blood from her temple where Maya’s ring had grazed her skin during the scuffle.

"She belongs in the guest suite," Eleanor snapped, her voice sharp as broken glass. "Lock her in until she learns some manners. A night in the dark will remind her of where she stands in this household."

Julian nodded slowly, extending a hand toward the dark corridor leading to the back of the house.

"Go on, Maya," Julian instructed quietly. "Walk."

Maya didn't move. She planted her feet firmly on the Persian runner, her jaw set. "I won't."

Julian’s smile vanished instantly. Without a word, he reached out, grabbed her upper arm with a grip like a vise, and began dragging her down the hall toward the heavy iron-reinforced door of the back guest room, ignoring her gasps of pain.
