Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Horizon

Maya stared down at the glowing screen of her phone. The unknown number flashed relentlessly against the dark glass, accompanied by a single incoming text message that sent a sudden, chilling jolt through her veins.

“You forgot to check the offshore trust in the Cayman Islands, Maya. Julian was only the manager. I am the owner.”

Maya’s breath caught in her throat. She looked up sharply at Sarah, who was still busy sorting through the federal evidence boxes by the mahogany desk.

"Sarah," Maya called out, her voice trembling slightly as she held up the glowing phone. "Look at this."

Sarah walked over quickly, reading the screen over Maya’s shoulder. The color drained from Sarah’s face for a fraction of a second before her professional instincts kicked in. She pulled out her own encrypted federal satellite phone and began tapping furiously on the screen.

"Trace that ping," Sarah ordered into the receiver, her tone razor-sharp. "National security priority. Find out who originated that transmission within thirty seconds."

Clara sat up from the leather sofa, her hollow eyes locking onto Maya with a grim, knowing expression. "It never ends with men like that, Maya. They always have a backup player in the shadows."

Maya looked down at the ledger in her hands, then toward the wide French doors leading out to the sunlit terrace where the morning breeze rustled the autumn leaves. She didn't feel the paralyzing terror that had gripped her in the dining room weeks ago. The fear was gone, replaced by an unyielding resilience forged in fire and broken glass.

"Let them try," Maya said softly, her voice carrying a quiet, unbreakable strength. "We survived Julian. We can survive whoever is behind him."

Sarah’s satellite phone beeped sharply, displaying a glowing red dot on the digital map of the eastern seaboard—a location barely ten miles away from their current position. Sarah looked up at Maya, a fierce, determined smile touching her lips.

"The ping is coming from the old marina," Sarah said, sliding her phone back into her trench coat. "Agent teams are already moving in. Do you want to come and watch the second empire fall?"

Maya closed the heavy leather ledger with a satisfying thud, placing it gently on the mahogany desk beside the ruined fragments of the white napkin and the spilled red wine stain that had started it all. She straightened her white knit sweater, turned toward the open terrace doors, and stepped out into the blinding, beautiful light of a brand-new day.

"Let's go," Maya said, walking forward without looking back.
