Chapter 10 - The Confession on Tape

The two uniformed police officers froze in the doorway, their hands instinctively hovering near their utility belts as the sudden chaos of the foyer hit them. One officer, a middle-aged sergeant with sharp gray temples and a stern expression, swept his flashlight beam from Eleanor groaning on the floor, up to Clara standing with the iron poker on the stairs, and finally landing squarely on Maya’s pale, determined face.
"Ma'am, step back and put your hands where we can see them," the sergeant commanded, his voice projecting authority. "Mr. Vance called in a violent disturbance."
"He set this up!" Maya cried out, taking a step forward while holding the small black digital recorder high in her hand like a beacon of hope. "My name is Maya Vance. I am his wife. For three years, he has abused me, isolated me, and locked his first wife—Clara—in the walls of this house! This recorder contains every conversation he had with his lawyers about how to fabricate her disappearance!"
Julian’s face went completely bloodless for a split second, the practiced mask of the grieving husband slipping to reveal a flash of pure, unadulterated panic. But he recovered with terrifying speed, stepping smoothly between Maya and the officers with his hands raised in a placating gesture.
"Officer, please, look at her," Julian said, his voice trembling with manufactured distress. "She’s having a severe psychotic break. She found some old dictation device from my office work and thinks it's a conspiracy. Please, don't let her hurt anyone else. Look at my mother—she's injured!"
The second officer moved past Julian to check on Eleanor, who immediately began wailing louder, playing the helpless, battered senior citizen to perfection. The sergeant hesitated, his eyes darting between Julian’s tailored white shirt and Maya’s wild, desperate expression. In a wealthy neighborhood like this, cops were conditioned to believe men in suits over disheveled women crying abuse.
"Ma'am, hand over the device," the sergeant ordered, stepping closer to Maya with his hand extended. "Let the department handle the evidence."
"No!" Maya yelled, backing away toward the grand staircase. "If you hand this to him, it will disappear! He owns half the precinct's oversight committee!"
"Grab her!" Julian shouted, dropping his facade entirely as desperation overtook him.
The officer lunged forward, grabbing Maya by the wrist and twisting her arm behind her back to secure her. The small digital recorder slipped from her trembling fingers, clattering against the marble floor and skittering across the smooth stone toward the dark hallway.

"No, wait!" Maya screamed as the metal casing of the recorder popped open under the impact, scattering its internal micro-SD card across the floorboards just as Julian’s polished dress shoe came down hard, crushing the tiny chip into a thousand invisible pieces.
