Chapter 1 - The First Snap

The dining room chandelier cast a cold, amber glow over the mahogany table, illuminating the absolute wreckage of a marriage built on silent intimidation. Maya sat frozen in her mid-twenties, her long brown hair framing a face pale and exhausted, wrapped tightly in a thick white knit sweater that felt like a straitjacket. Across from her, Eleanor, the senior woman with sharp gray hair pulled back ruthlessly and wearing a stern brown button-down shirt, leaned forward with venom dripping from every syllable.

"Consider that a lesson!" Eleanor shouted, her finger jabbing aggressively toward the white napkin resting near Maya’s plate, marred by a dark, ugly red wine stain that had spilled during the sudden outburst.

Julian, sitting calmly in his crisp white dress shirt and black tie, did not even look up from his plate. He continued sawing methodically at his roast beef with steady, emotionless precision.

"Mom’s just teaching you how to be a better wife, wife," Julian said smoothly, his voice devoid of any warmth, treating human degradation as casually as passing the salt.

Maya’s teeth gritted so hard her jaw ached, her chest heaving with ragged, desperate breaths as absolute fury and heartbreak locked in her throat. She stared at the red stain, then at the bowl of untouched soup, and finally at Julian’s cold, predatory eyes.

"For nothing!" Maya cried out, her voice cracking under the weight of three years of systematic psychological torture.

Before either of them could blink, Maya snapped. She lunged forward with blinding speed, her hands burying deep into Eleanor’s gray hair. With a primal roar of suppressed rage, she yanked the older woman’s head violently down into the table. China rattled, and a tall white taper candle tipped over, rolling across the mahogany wood as Eleanor shrieked in sudden, genuine terror. Julian dropped his fork, his calm facade shattering into absolute shock as Eleanor struggled beneath Maya’s iron grip.

"Get off her, you lunatic!" Julian roared, finally losing his composure as he lunged across the table to pry Maya’s fingers loose from his mother’s hair.

Maya shoved Julian back with a strength she didn't know she possessed, panting heavily as she stared down at the trembling Eleanor.

"This marriage is over," Maya whispered, backing away from the table while leaving a clump of gray hair in her fist.

Julian grabbed his mother by the shoulders, his face twisting into a mask of pure malice.

"You think you can just walk out of this house?" Julian snarled, taking a slow step toward her. "Look at the front door, Maya. Try to turn the handle."
