Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

Maya froze, her fingers hovering inches from the brass dial of the floor safe. The voice from the air vent was raspy, exhausted, and unmistakably female, coming from somewhere deep within the building's ancient ductwork. Goosebumps erupted across Maya’s arms beneath her white knit sweater.

"Who's there?" Maya whispered back into the darkness, her voice trembling as she stood up and backed away from the rug. "Who is speaking to me?"

"Listen to me carefully," the voice hissed, accompanied by the faint sound of ragged breathing. "I’m in the service crawlspace behind the wall. Julian thinks I’m dead. He locked me away two years ago when I tried to leave with the company ledgers. My name is Clara."

Maya’s breath caught in her throat. Clara. Julian’s first wife. The official family history, repeated by Eleanor at every society dinner, was that Clara had suffered a severe mental breakdown, fled to Europe in the middle of the night, and abandoned Julian out of sheer instability. The tabloids had run stories for weeks.

"You're... you're Clara?" Maya stammered, covering her mouth with her hand to stifle her rising panic. "Everyone thinks you're in Switzerland. Julian said you ran away."

"Julian lies about everything," Clara’s voice replied, sounding weaker now, as if speaking required monumental effort. "The safe... the combination is the date of the incorporation of his company. Open it, Maya. Inside are the bank accounts, the shell companies, and the police reports he buried before he married you. It’s the only way to destroy him."

Maya stared at the brass dial on the floor. "How do I know the date?"

"It’s engraved on the back of the grandfather clock in the foyer," Clara whispered urgently. "The metal plaque at the base. But hurry—Julian and his mother are coming back. I hear their footsteps on the stairs."

A sharp metallic clang echoed from the vent as Clara’s breathing suddenly cut off, replaced by the heavy silence of the crawlspace. A second later, heavy footsteps thudded down the hallway outside Maya’s door. The key turned in the lock with a sharp, echoing snap, and the heavy wood door swung open to reveal Julian standing in the threshold, holding a silver tray with a glass of water and a small white pill.

"I thought you might be thirsty, darling," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly sweet as he stepped into the room with a predatory smile.
