Chapter 7 - Blood in the Foyer

Julian released Maya so violently she stumbled forward onto her knees, gasping for air. He turned away from her, throwing open the bedroom door and sprinting down the dark corridor toward the foyer. Maya scrambled to her feet, wiping a stray tear from her cheek, and crept cautiously to the doorway to peer into the hallway.
In the dim light of the grand foyer, a terrifying scene unfolded. Eleanor was sprawled across the polished marble floor near the base of the grand staircase, clutching her shoulder and groaning in agony. A shattered porcelain vase lay scattered around her in a thousand jagged pieces, dark water pooling across the pristine floor. Standing at the top of the stairs, silhouetted against the amber chandelier, was a tall, skeletal figure wrapped in tattered gray rags, holding a heavy iron fireplace poker.
It was Clara.
"You kept me in the dark, Julian!" Clara shrieked, her voice echoing through the vaulted ceiling with a haunting, manic resonance. "You took my life, my name, my sanity! And now I’m taking yours!"
Julian froze at the foot of the stairs, his eyes wide with genuine shock as he stared up at the ghost he thought he had buried forever. For the first time since Maya had met him, Julian looked utterly powerless, his carefully constructed empire crumbling under the weight of his own monstrous secrets.
"Clara... stay back," Julian stammered, holding up his hands defensively as he backed away from his mother’s groaning form. "You’re unwell. We can fix this—"
"There's nothing to fix!" Clara screamed, raising the heavy iron poker above her head and taking a rapid step down the wooden stairs.
Maya watched from the doorway, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. This was her moment. Julian was distracted, Eleanor was incapacitated, and the heavy front door was just twenty feet away across the foyer. But as she took a step out of the guest suite, her foot kicked something small and metallic lying near the baseboard.
She looked down. It was a brass master key ring that had fallen from Julian’s pocket during his frantic dash down the hall.
Maya dropped to her knees and grabbed the heavy ring of keys, her fingers flying over the tags until she found the one labeled with a stamped metal tag reading MAIN. She sprinted across the dark hardwood floor toward the massive front door, sliding past Julian and Clara without either of them noticing her desperate dash for freedom.
She shoved the key into the deadbolt, turned it with a satisfying clack, and pulled down the heavy steel chain. The door swung open, flooding the dark foyer with blinding, brilliant moonlight and the cool night air of the outside world.
"Maya, stop!" Julian roared, abandoning his defense against Clara and lunging toward the open door.
May you like
Maya stepped across the threshold into the night, but before she could run down the stone steps, a heavy hand clamped around her ankle, tripping her hard onto the concrete porch.
