Chapter 8 - The Threshold of Freedom

The impact knocked the wind out of Maya’s lungs as she hit the cold concrete of the front porch. The night air rushed past her face, smelling of pine and damp earth—the smell of the outside world she had been denied for years. But Julian’s hand remained locked around her ankle like a steel trap, dragging her backward across the threshold toward the open doorway of the house.
"Oh no you don't," Julian snarled, his voice thick with fury as he hauled her back into the foyer, kicking the heavy oak door shut with his heel. The loud thud echoed through the hall, sealing off the moonlight and plunging them back into the amber glow of the chandelier.
Maya kicked back wildly with her free foot, catching Julian square in the shin. He cursed, loosening his grip just enough for her to wrench her leg free. She scrambled to her feet, backing up against the wall near the grand staircase where Eleanor was still groaning on the marble floor.
Clara stood a few steps higher on the staircase, the heavy iron poker still clutched in her thin, trembling hands. Her hollow eyes darted between Julian and Maya, a terrifying, erratic energy radiating from her skeletal frame.
"You can't lock us away anymore, Julian," Clara laughed, a high-pitched, broken sound that sent chills down Maya’s spine. "The walls are coming down. Everyone will know what you keep in the basement."
Julian straightened his posture, wiping a speck of dust from the knee of his dark trousers. Despite the chaos, the cold, calculating mask was sliding back over his features. He glanced down at his mother, then glared at Clara, before turning his icy gaze entirely onto Maya.
"You almost made it, Maya," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm once again. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy black smartphone—her phone, the one he had confiscated hours ago. "Too bad you forgot the security cameras covering the perimeter. The police are already on their way, but they aren't coming to rescue you."
Maya’s blood ran cold. "What are you talking about?"
"I called them five minutes ago," Julian smiled coldly, tapping the screen of the phone. "I reported an escaped mental patient—Clara—and a violent, delusional spouse—you—who attacked my elderly mother in a psychotic rage. The narrative is already written, Maya. When the officers walk through that door, they will see an unstable woman holding a stolen key and a raving lunatic on the stairs. And I am the grieving, terrorized husband trying to keep my family safe."

The front gate buzzer suddenly blared through the house intercom, followed by the distant wail of approaching sirens echoing up the winding driveway.
