CHAPTER 8: The Plot Unravels
Determined to end the attacks once and for all, Julian hired Marcus Vance’s former chief of staff, who had recently resigned over ethical disputes. Armed with forensic financial investigators, Julian’s team spent forty-eight sleepless hours digging through the private ledgers of the Vance campaign and the Sterling board members who were colluding with them.
What they found was far more dangerous than simple corporate sabotage.
"Take a look at this," Julian’s lead investigator, Miller, said, sliding a thick blue folder across the mahogany desk in Julian’s study. "Senator Vance didn't just want the marriage for social status. His foundation is insolvent. He funneled forty million dollars of offshore campaign funds into bad real estate derivatives."
Julian turned the pages, his eyes widening. "He needed the merger with Sterling Capital to absorb the holding company and bury the debt."
"Exactly," Miller replied. "And Arthur Pendelton was getting a ten percent kickback to push the vote through your board. The moment you called off the wedding, Vance's entire financial house of cards started collapsing. That's why they are desperate to force Marisa out and declare you legally incapacitated by scandal."
