CHAPTER 5: Whispers in the Shadows

While Julian fought battles in the boardroom, the Sterling estate was under siege from a different kind of predator. Long-lens cameras lined the perimeter fence, and delivery drivers were offered thousands of dollars by paparazzi for photos of the "Maid and the Secret Heiress."

Inside the house, Marisa tried to keep Valentina’s routine as normal as possible. They baked cookies in the industrial mansion kitchen, but every ringing telephone caused Marisa to flinch.

In the late afternoon, Marisa received a private parcel delivered directly to the staff entrance. It bore no return address, only high-grade parchment paper sealed with wax.

Inside was a single typed letter and a flash drive:

> *Marisa,*
> *Do you really think a billionaire’s world will accept a girl raised in service quarters? The press will dissect your past, your background, and your dignity. Within six months, Julian’s lawyers will prove you an unfit mother and take Valentina entirely.*
> *Leave tonight. There is an offshore account in your name with five million dollars waiting. Take your daughter and give her a real life before the Sterling machine destroys you both.*

Marisa’s hands shook as she clutched the paper to her chest. The fear wasn't about money; it was the terrifying truth of high-society power. She knew how easily wealthy dynasties could erase people like her.

When the kitchen door swung open, Marisa quickly tucked the letter beneath the countertop, but she couldn't hide the pale terror on her face.
