CHAPTER 13: Shadows of the Past

While peace had returned to their lives, one final piece of unfinished business remained. Julian received a formal visitation request from the federal correctional facility where Arthur Pendelton was awaiting trial.

Julian drove to the facility alone. Sitting across from his former mentor behind the glass partition, Julian saw an old, broken man stripped of his corporate arrogance.

"I didn't expect you to come, Julian," Pendelton said, his voice raspy through the intercom receiver.

"I came to hear why," Julian said plainly. "My father trusted you for thirty years."

Pendelton looked down at his cuffed hands. "Your father built an empire on blood, sweat, and ruthless isolation. When he died, I thought you were weak because you had empathy. I thought the Vance deal was necessary to make you ruthless enough to survive."

"Empathy isn't weakness, Arthur," Julian answered calmly. "It's the only thing that kept me from ending up on your side of the glass."

Pendelton sighed, nodding slowly with deep regret. "Take care of that little girl. She has her grandfather's fire, but thank God she has your heart."

Julian hung up the receiver, stood up, and walked out of the prison into the bright midday sun, closing the final door on his past.
