CHAPTER 3: Beyond the Uniform

The guest wing of the Sterling estate was a maze of lavish silk wallpapers and antique furniture, but the penthouse suite felt strangely cavernous. Marisa sat on the edge of the velvet armchair, feeling distinctly out of place without her apron and cleaning cart.
Across the room, Valentina sat on a hand-woven rug, carefully brushing the matted ears of her plush rabbit with an old plastic comb.
A gentle knock preceded Julian entering the room. He had loosened his tie, the sharp edges of his corporate demeanor softened by an exhausted tenderness. He carried a silver tray with warm milk and freshly baked shortbread.
"You don't have to wait on us, Julian," Marisa said softly, rising quickly out of long-standing habit.
"Sit, please," Julian insisted, placing the tray on the low coffee table. He sat on the floor opposite Valentina, deliberately lowering himself to the little girl’s eye level. "Hello, Valentina."
The little girl hid behind the bunny for a second, her big eyes darting toward her mother before peeking back at Julian. "Are you the man from the frame on Mommy's bedside table?"
Julian’s chest tightened painfully. He glanced at Marisa, who looked away, blinking back tears.
"I am," Julian whispered. "I'm your dad."
"Mommy said you were busy saving the world," Valentina said simply, her childish innocence cutting straight through Julian's hardened conscience. "Did you finish?"
Julian swallowed hard, reaching out a hesitant hand. Valentina didn't pull away; instead, she placed the plush rabbit’s soft paw directly into his palm.

"I’m done saving the world," Julian said, his voice cracking with genuine emotion. "From now on, I’m staying right here."
