CHAPTER 1: The Shattered Vow
The echoing silence in the foyer was heavier than any wedding vow Julian Sterling had planned to recite that afternoon. He remained on one knee on the imported Italian marble, his fingers tightening around the warm gold medallion. The intricate crest carved into the coin was one of only three in existence—a family heirloom given only to the Sterling bloodline.
Victoria stood frozen, her designer satin train pooling uselessly behind her. Her polished facade crumbled, replaced by a cold fury that distorted her delicate features.
"Julian, look at yourself," Victoria hissed, lowering her voice so the catering staff hovering near the arched doorway wouldn't hear. "You're kneeling in front of household staff. The guests are arriving at the chapel in forty minutes. The press is already outside the estate gates!"
Julian didn't look at her. His gaze remained locked on the five-year-old girl clutching the stuffed rabbit. Valentina had his father’s striking amber-brown eyes and the exact slight cleft in her chin.
"Marisa," Julian said, his voice quiet, raw with disbelief. "Why didn't you say anything? Five years..."
Marisa wiped a tear from her cheek, her hands still resting protectively on Valentina’s shoulders. "You were building an empire, Julian. Your father... before he died, he warned me that your family’s board would tear a child apart if she was born out of wedlock. I didn't want wealth for her. I only wanted peace."
"Peace?" Victoria scoffed, taking a sharp step forward. "This is extortion! She planted this to ruin our wedding day and cash a massive check!"
Julian stood up slowly. Standing at six-foot-two, his presence filled the cavernous entryway. He looked at Victoria—the woman chosen for him by corporate mergers and social circles—and saw only empty ambition.
"Take off the ring, Victoria," Julian said evenly.
"What did you just say?" she whispered, the color draining from her face.
