CHAPTER 4: The Corporate Ambush

The next morning, the board of directors at Sterling Capital convened an emergency executive meeting. Julian arrived at the downtown glass skyscraper dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, but instead of his usual entourage of investment analysts, his personal bodyguard waited just outside the boardroom doors.

As Julian took his seat at the head of the long glass table, twelve board members stared back at him with thinly veiled contempt.

"Julian, the market opened down seven percent," announced Arthur Pendelton, the senior board chairman and a longtime ally of the Vance family. "The headlines are calling you erratic, unstable, and unfit for the CEO position. The Vance family has pulled out of the joint logistics venture."

"The logistics contract was over-leveraged anyway," Julian responded calmly, opening his leather portfolio. "We were carrying sixty percent of the liability for thirty percent of the operational control. It was a bad deal designed to prop up Vance's political campaign."

"This isn't about numbers, Julian!" Arthur barked, leaning over the table. "It's about stability. You broke a high-profile engagement for a scandalous domestic secret. The shareholders are spooked. We are preparing a vote of no confidence unless you establish a blind trust for this child and formally reconcile with the Vance estate."

Julian looked around the table. These were men his late father had dined with, men who measured human worth strictly by quarterly balance sheets.

"My daughter is not a scandal to be buried under legal trusts," Julian stated firmly, his voice cutting through the murmurs. "If you want a vote of no confidence, call the meeting. But remember: I control forty-two percent of the voting shares. Cross this line, and I will restructure this board before the closing bell."
