Chapter 8: The Interception**

The headlights belonged to two armored black Suburbans. Arthur’s private security had bypassed the highway tolls by tracking Martha's vintage vehicle through classic visual aerial reconnaissance.

"Hold on!" Martha barked, dropping the truck into third gear as the engine roared in protest.

The lead SUV accelerated violently, slamming into the rear quarter-panel of the old truck. The impact jolted the cab, throwing Lily against Victoria’s chest. Victoria held her child with ferocious strength, using her own body as a human cushion against the metal door.

"They're trying to pit-maneuver us off the bridge!" Marcus shouted from the passenger side, drawing his service weapon. "Do not let them box you in, Martha!"

"I've been driving these mountain roads since before their parents were born!" the old woman shouted back, slamming her boot onto the brake pedal unexpectedly.

The chasing SUV, caught off-guard by the sudden deceleration, surged past their left side. Martha violently jerked the heavy steering wheel, using the truck's reinforced steel bumper to ram the SUV's rear axle. The modern vehicle spun out across the slick asphalt, crashing heavily into the concrete barrier with a shower of sparks and deploying airbags.

The second SUV, however, was closing fast, its front grill fitted with a heavy push-bar aimed directly at their driver's side door.
