Chapter 2: Cold Engines and Warm Milk**

The safehouse was a modest craftsman bungalow nestled deep in the pine forests of upstate New York, miles away from the glass-and-steel traps of Manhattan. The heavy rain beat a steady rhythm against the cedar shingles, a soothing contrast to the chaos of the morning raid.

Victoria set a steaming mug of warm milk with honey on the wooden kitchen table. Lily sat wrapped in a heavy wool blanket, her eyes still darting toward the shadows behind the pantry door. The trauma of the Sterling estate lingered like a ghost in the corners of her vision.

"Is the bad lady coming here?" Lily asked, her voice barely louder than the hum of the refrigerator.

Victoria pulled up a chair and sat directly in front of her daughter, bringing herself to Lily's eye level. She took a warm, damp cloth and gently began wiping away the remaining smudges of grime from Lily's cheekbones.

"No one is coming through that door, sweetheart," Victoria said gently. "The police have Mr. Sterling's financial records, and the child welfare authorities have revoked Julianna's guardianship permanently. You are safe."

"She said... she said you gave me away because I wasn't perfect," Lily whispered, a single tear cutting a clean path through the dampness on her skin. "She said you were poor and broken."

Victoria’s heart cracked, but her composure remained steady. She took Lily’s small, cold hands into her own. "I gave you to a family I thought would protect you when I was fighting for my life in the courts. I made a terrible mistake trusting bloodlines over character. But perfection isn't what makes you loved, Lily. You are my daughter because of your heart, not because of a contract."

Lily looked down at the mug, wrapping her small fingers around the warmth of the ceramic. For the first time in six months, her shoulders dropped from her ears.
