Chapter 13: Rebuilding from the Roots**

Spring arrived in the coastal town of Camden, Maine, bringing with it the scent of saltwater, blooming lilacs, and damp earth.

Victoria had purchased a small, weathered shingle cottage overlooking the harbor. It was far from luxurious, with creaky floorboards and a porch that needed a fresh coat of paint, but it was theirs. The walls were covered not with expensive oil paintings, but with Lily’s colorful crayon drawings of boats, lighthouses, and two figures holding hands under a bright yellow sun.

Lily sat on the front porch steps, her knees bare and clean, humming a tune as she planted sweet peas in a wooden window box. There was no dirt smudged on her face from neglect—only a speck of rich garden soil on the tip of her nose from working alongside her mother.

Victoria stepped out onto the porch carrying two bowls of fresh strawberries. She sat down beside Lily, stretching her legs out into the warm afternoon sunshine.

"Mommy?" Lily asked, placing a small green seedling into the dark earth.

"Yes, my love?"

"Do people ever get completely unbroken?"

Victoria paused, looking out over the calm blue waters of the bay where fishing boats drifted slowly toward the docks. "I don't think people are like cups or plates, Lily. When we get hurt, we don't break into pieces. We grow around the hurt, like an old oak tree grows around a stone. The stone stays there, but the tree becomes bigger, stronger, and more beautiful because of how it had to reach for the light."
