Chapter 15: The Ten Seconds That Mattered**

On Lily’s eighth birthday, the harbor was bathed in the golden light of an early summer sunset. A small gathering of genuine friends stood on the wooden deck of the cottage: Martha, Marcus, a few neighbors from the local marina, and children from Lily’s elementary school class.

Lily stood before a homemade lemon cake topped with eight bright candles flickering in the gentle ocean breeze.

"Make a wish, sweetheart!" Martha called out with a wide smile, her camera ready.

Lily closed her eyes tightly for several seconds. She didn't wish for grand toys, expensive dresses, or a life of luxury. She simply felt the warmth of the sun on her face, the laughter of real friends around her, and the gentle hand of her mother resting reassuringly on her shoulder.

She opened her eyes and blew out every candle in a single, confident breath.

The deck erupted in cheers and applause. As the children ran off toward the shoreline to skip flat stones across the calm water, Victoria knelt down beside Lily.

"What did you wish for?" Victoria asked with a soft smile.

Lily wrapped her arms around Victoria’s neck, hugging her with a strength that came from deep within a restored and joyful heart.

"I didn't wish for anything new," Lily whispered into her ear. "I just thanked the world for giving me ten seconds."

Victoria smiled, holding her daughter close as the ocean tide rolled gently against the rocks below, steady, constant, and entirely free.
