While Martha kept Lily entertained by teaching her how to identify different bird calls from an old field guide, Victoria and Marcus—who arrived via an unmarked logging truck—spread the Sterling financial documents across the steel planning table.
"Look at this transaction chain," Victoria pointed to a series of wire transfers dated three days before Lily was taken. "Arthur didn't just want custody of Lily to spite me. He needed her legally registered as his sole living heir before his board of directors held their annual vote on Friday."
Marcus adjusted his glasses, leaning closer to the microfilms. "The Sterling charter has a legacy clause. If Arthur doesn't have a direct blood descendant or an adopted legal ward named in the trust by his sixtieth birthday, the foundation’s assets revert to the public trust."
"Lily was never a child to them," Victoria said, her knuckles turning white against the edge of the steel table. "She was a five-hundred-million-dollar signature on a corporate takeover."
"And Julianna?" Marcus asked.
"Julianna was the paid keeper," Victoria replied coldly. "Her luxury lifestyle was contingent on keeping Lily compliant until the ink on the adoption decree dried under Henderson’s seal. That’s why she was breaking her spirit. A broken child doesn't speak up in front of probate judges."
Marcus slammed his hand on the desk. "This isn't just civil fraud; it's child trafficking disguised as elite custody management. But we need a judge outside the Second Circuit to override Henderson’s injunction."
