Chapter 14: The Unwritten Ledger**

That evening, Victoria sat at her small oak desk by the bedroom window. In front of her lay the small leather-bound notebook she had kept during her darkest years—the personal journal filled with court dates, evidence notes, and moments of despair when she feared she would never hold her daughter again.

She opened the book to the final blank page.

She did not write about Arthur Sterling’s sentencing, nor Julianna’s plea deal, nor the millions of dollars that had been redistributed to the victims of the trust. Instead, she wrote down the simple moments of the day:

*May 14th: Lily laughed until she cried because the neighbor's golden retriever stole an old garden glove. She ate all her strawberries. She fell asleep without checking the window locks.*

Victoria closed the book and placed it inside the bottom drawer of the desk, not hiding it with fear, but storing it away like an old tool that had served its purpose.

Walking down the short hallway, she stopped at Lily's open door. The soft nightlight cast a warm amber glow across the room. Lily was sleeping deeply, sprawled across the center of the bed, her breathing slow, rhythmic, and peaceful.

The world outside was still vast, unpredictable, and sometimes harsh, but inside this small wooden house by the sea, there were no timers counting down, no locks without keys, and no voices demanding perfection.
