Chapter 8 - The Shadow in the Boardroom

The heavy oak doors of the executive boardroom flew open, but it wasn't the police or the board members who walked in; it was a stranger wearing an expensive, tailored Italian suit that didn't quite hide the tactical holster strapped beneath his armpit. Rebecca stood at the head of the long mahogany table, her phone still pressed to her ear as she finalized the asset freeze orders with Agent Miller. She lowered the device slowly, her sharp gaze locking onto the uninvited guest who strolled into the room as if he owned the entire building.
"Who let you past security?" Rebecca demanded, her voice cutting through the ambient hum of the ventilation system.
The man smiled, flashing a set of unnaturally white teeth, and tossed a heavy silver access badge onto the glass table. It slid across the polished surface and came to a stop right against Rebecca’s fingertips. She glanced down; it was Julian’s master administrator pass—the one that should have been confiscated by federal agents twenty minutes ago.
"Security was remarkably cooperative once I reminded them who actually funds their pension funds," the man replied smoothly, his accent carrying a faint, aristocratic European lopsidedness. "My name is Viktor Vance, though most people in your position prefer to call me... the liquidator."
Arthur Sterling, who had just re-entered the room after leaving Julian’s interrogation, slammed his cane onto the floor with a deafening crack.
"Sterling Global is not for sale," Arthur barked, stepping between Viktor and Rebecca. "Get out of our building before I have you thrown out the window."
Viktor chuckled softly, unbuttoning his suit jacket and pulling a thick, cream-colored document from his inner pocket. He laid it flat on the table, right beside Julian’s recent confession.
"You misunderstand, Mr. Sterling. I am not here to buy. I am here to collect," Viktor said, his smile vanishing as his eyes turned glacial. "Julian used company assets as collateral to secure a fifty-million-dollar emergency liquidity loan from my syndicate three weeks ago. Since your brilliant son is currently sitting in a federal holding cell, that debt defaults immediately to the parent company... which happens to be Sterling Global."
Rebecca stared at the document, her heart skipping a beat as she recognized the notarized signatures and corporate seals. Julian hadn't just embezzled funds; he had mortgaged the entire physical infrastructure of the company's global shipping ports to a shadow syndicate known only as the Obsidian Network. If the debt wasn't settled within twenty-four hours, Viktor’s syndicate would legally seize control of every cargo vessel, warehouse, and distribution hub owned by Sterling Global across three continents.
"That loan agreement was signed under fraudulent pretenses," Rebecca countered steadily, hiding the sudden panic clawing at her throat. "Julian lacked the board authorization required to encumber corporate assets."
"That is a civil matter you can argue in a bankrupt courtroom," Viktor replied, leaning over the table until his face was inches from hers. "Or... you can accept a private arrangement."
Rebecca narrowed her eyes, refusing to flinch.
"What kind of arrangement?"
Viktor smiled darkly, sliding a second, much smaller envelope across the glass toward her.
