Chapter 11 - The Inheritance of Ashes

The morning sun broke through the heavy Manhattan clouds, casting long, golden beams across the sprawling walnut desk in the executive office. Rebecca sat in the high-backed leather chair, her fingers resting lightly on the polished armrests. The federal raids had concluded hours ago, scrubbing the last vestiges of Viktor’s syndicate from the lower levels of the building, but the silence in the room felt heavy, almost suffocating. The board of directors had scheduled an emergency confirmation vote for noon to formally ratify her position as Chief Executive Officer and sole heir to the Sterling empire. Yet, despite the complete victory over Julian and the Syndicate, an unsettling emptiness lingered in the air.

A soft knock interrupted her thoughts, and Marcus Vance stepped into the office, holding a thick, leather-bound ledger that predated even her father's tenure.

"The board is assembling downstairs," Marcus said cautiously, his eyes avoiding hers. "They're ready to ratify the succession."

Rebecca nodded slowly without turning around. "Let them wait a few more minutes, Marcus. I need to finish reading this."

Marcus stepped closer, glancing down at the open ledger on the desk. It was an old financial record from the founding days of Sterling Global—the era when Arthur Sterling and his original business partner had built the empire from the ground up. But something about the entries didn't add up; entire chapters of the company's early funding had been redacted with thick, black marker, and a series of handwritten notes scribbled in the margins bore her mother’s initials.

"What is that?" Marcus asked, his voice dropping to a whisper.

"My mother's journal," Rebecca replied quietly, turning a fragile page. "Julian wasn't the first person to try to burn this company down from the inside. He was just reading from an old playbook."

Marcus swallowed hard. "What do you mean?"

Before Rebecca could answer, the office intercom hissed to life, broadcasting the frantic voice of the head of building security from the lobby.

"Miss Sterling! You need to look at the lobby security feeds immediately! A delivery courier just dropped off a sealed crate addressed to you... and the blast-detection sensors are reading a restricted signature!"

Rebecca stood up so fast her chair rolled backward against the wood paneling. Without a word, she sprinted toward the private elevator bank, punching the basement override code into the keypad. The doors slid open instantly, revealing an empty car that plunged downward into the subterranean levels of the building. When the doors finally opened on the sub-basement shipping dock, the air was thick with the smell of damp concrete and ozone. In the center of the loading bay sat a heavy wooden crate marked with the exact same crimson seal Viktor’s syndicate had used. Standing beside it was a lone figure wearing a grey trench coat, holding a detonator remote in his bare hand.
