Chapter 3 - The Empty Office

The mahogany desk in the executive suite of Sterling Global smelled of old leather and polished brass, but to Julian, it felt like a prison cell. Dawn was just breaking over the Manhattan skyline, casting long, bruised shadows across the thirty-sixth-floor office. He had spent the entire night pacing the floorboards, dialing every corporate lawyer, corrupt politician, and Swiss banker he had ever bribed, but every single line went straight to voicemail. They had all abandoned him the moment Arthur’s signature hit the wire services. A sharp rap on the heavy oak door broke the heavy silence, and before Julian could grant permission, the door swung open. It wasn't security, and it wasn't the police. It was Marcus Vance, the senior managing partner of Sterling’s corporate counsel, holding a thick cardboard box filled with personal effects.

"You need to clear your desk, Julian," Marcus said without looking up from his tablet. "The board has already voted unanimously to freeze all your corporate assets."

Julian gripped the edge of the mahogany desk until his knuckles turned completely white.

"You can't do that! I am still a registered director of this company!" Julian yelled, slamming his hand down.

"Not anymore," Marcus replied coldly, sliding a single legal document across the blotter. "Read paragraph four."

Julian’s eyes scanned the dense legal jargon until they locked onto the highlighted clause. It was a morality and fiduciary breach clause, signed by Arthur and countersigned by Rebecca less than two hours ago. It stripped him of every share, every option, and every voting right he had accumulated over the past decade. Worse still, it categorized his embezzlement not as a corporate oversight, but as criminal theft against the Sterling Foundation. He fell back into his leather chair, the air rushing out of his lungs as if he had been struck in the chest with a sledgehammer. Marcus didn't wait for a response; he dropped the cardboard box directly onto Julian’s expensive laptop, spilling a collection of personal trinkets across the desk.

"Rebecca is downstairs in the boardroom," Marcus added, his voice dropping to a low, conspiratorial whisper. "She’s meeting with the federal prosecutors you thought you paid off. I’d suggest you leave through the subterranean loading dock before they come up to arrest you."

Julian looked up, his face twisted in a mask of pure desperation and rage.

"She thinks she's won," Julian hissed, his voice trembling with manic energy. "She thinks she can destroy me and take the empire. But she doesn't know what I built underneath her feet."

Marcus raised an eyebrow, pausing near the door.

"What are you talking about?"

Julian let out a dark, hollow laugh that echoed chillingly against the floor-to-ceiling windows.

"I didn't just embezzle three million dollars, Marcus. I drained the entire R&D reserve to fund a shadow subsidiary. If the feds freeze my accounts, the automatic kill-switch protocol deletes every single proprietary patent Sterling Global owns within forty-eight hours."

Before Marcus could process the terrifying implication of those words, the office lights flickered violently, turning from warm amber to a harsh, blood-red emergency glow as the main console flashed a critical system error.
