Chapter 4 - The Red Protocol

The emergency klaxons began to wail across the entire thirty-sixth floor, cutting through the morning calm with a piercing, rhythmic shriek. Julian stood up slowly from his leather chair, a twisted smile breaking across his pale, exhausted face as the red emergency lights washed over his tuxedo.
"What did you just do?" Marcus demanded, dropping his tablet onto the rug as he rushed back toward the desk.
"I told you, Marcus," Julian said smoothly, buttoning his suit jacket with deliberate care. "I built an empire within an empire. Rebecca wants a corpse to rule over, she can have a hollow shell."
On the central wall monitor, the corporate network dashboard turned from a stable corporate blue to an aggressive crimson warning screen. Code lines cascaded downward in a cascading waterfall of encrypted data, wiping out the main database indexes one by one. Downstairs on the ground floor, Rebecca stood at the head of the massive glass boardroom table, flanked by two federal agents in dark suits and an ashen-faced board of directors. She watched the holographic projector display the sudden drop in system integrity across all global branches. Her fingers rested lightly on the polished glass surface, her dark eyes narrowing as she calculated the velocity of the data purge. She recognized the unique algorithmic signature immediately; it was a ghost protocol she had helped architect years ago before Julian had betrayed her.
"He’s initiating the scorched-earth sequence," Rebecca said aloud, her voice eerily calm despite the collective panic erupting around the table.
"We have to shut down the main server room immediately!" one of the senior directors panicked, standing up so fast his chair tipped over backward.
Rebecca didn't flinch. She turned her gaze slowly toward the lead federal agent, her expression unwavering.
"Agent Miller, issue an immediate nationwide warrant for Julian Sterling’s arrest on charges of domestic industrial terrorism," she commanded, her voice carrying absolute authority. "And lock down the subterranean data center before he wipes the offshore backups."
Agent Miller nodded grimly, tapping his radio to dispatch tactical units to the basement levels. But Rebecca knew deep down that physical security forces wouldn't be fast enough to stop a digital execution already in motion. Julian was miles ahead, sitting comfortably in the back of a black town car idling outside the building, watching the destruction unfold on his encrypted burner phone. He tapped the screen, authorizing the final phase of the override that would lock out the primary administrator credentials forever. Just as the screen displayed a ninety-nine percent completion rate, a sharp knock rattled the tinted window of the car. Julian turned his head sharply, expecting federal police, but instead found a masked courier holding a single silver flash drive against the glass.
Julian rolled the window down an inch, his eyes darting suspiciously toward the stranger.
"What is this?" Julian snapped.
"A message from your sister," the courier whispered, dropping the drive onto Julian's lap before vanishing into the morning fog.

Julian picked up the metallic drive with trembling fingers; it was glowing with a pulsing blue light, and stamped directly onto its casing was his personal private encryption key—the very one he thought only he possessed.
