Chapter 12 - The Sub-Basement Countdown

The fluorescent lights of the subterranean loading dock flickered ominously, casting long, dancing shadows across the concrete pillars. The man in the grey trench coat turned slowly around, revealing a face deeply lined with age and scarred by old burns. It wasn't Viktor, and it wasn't one of Julian’s hired thugs; it was Thomas Vance, Viktor’s older brother and the hidden architect of the Obsidian Network.
"You walk right into traps very easily, Rebecca," Thomas said, his voice smooth and raspy as he held up the small black detonator remote.
Rebecca kept her distance, her posture rigid, her hands balled into tight fists at her sides. "You don't have an exit strategy, Thomas. The federal police are already securing the perimeter upstairs."
Thomas let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "Police? My dear girl, the police are currently chasing ghosts. This crate isn't packed with explosives. It’s packed with the original hard drives containing every illegal transaction your father made to build this bloody empire forty years ago."
Rebecca’s eyes darted to the heavy wooden crate resting on the concrete pallet. "If you destroy those drives, you destroy your own leverage."
"I don't need leverage anymore," Thomas replied, his thumb hovering directly over the red button on the detonator. "I need vengeance. Your father put my brother away, and now I'm going to turn this entire building into a tomb for the Sterling dynasty."
Before Thomas could press the button, the heavy freight elevator behind Rebecca chimed softly. Arthur Sterling stepped out of the car, moving slowly without his cane, his face set in grim determination.
"Put the detonator down, Thomas," Arthur commanded, his voice echoing off the concrete walls with startling authority.
Thomas froze, his eyes widening in pure shock as he stared at the old patriarch. "Arthur? I thought your heart gave out months ago!"
"A lot of people make the mistake of underestimating a dying beast," Arthur replied, taking a slow, steady step forward into the dim light.
Rebecca didn't wait. While Thomas was momentarily distracted by her father’s sudden appearance, she lunged forward with explosive speed, tackling Thomas around the waist and driving him hard against the concrete floor. The detonator slipped from his fingers, clattering across the wet floorboards and sliding out of reach beneath a heavy wooden pallet. Thomas roared with fury, swinging his elbow upward and catching Rebecca across the jaw, sending her stumbling backward. He scrambled on all fours toward the remote, his fingers stretching desperately out across the concrete just as the heavy freight elevator doors dinged a second time.
Agent Miller and a squad of heavily armed tactical officers swarmed out of the elevator, their assault rifles instantly trained on Thomas's back.
"Federal agents! Don't move an inch!" Miller bellowed.
Thomas froze, his hand hovering mere millimeters from the detonator. He slowly lifted his head, a twisted, victorious smile spreading across his scarred face as he looked past the officers toward the ceiling above them.

"You're too late," Thomas whispered. "The automatic override was set an hour ago. The building is already locked down."
