Chapter 1 - The Descent Begins

Julian crossed his arms, his posture rigid.

"Please escort her out. She isn't on tonight's guest list."

Rebecca didn't flinch.

"That's fine. You're only doing your job."

Julian narrowed his eyes.

"Rebecca, you really should have chosen another night."

An older man in a grey suit appeared. Julian panicked.

"Step back. She is my successor."

Rebecca adjusted her dress strap.

"Now you understand why I came back."

The ballroom chatter died instantly. Julian stared at his father, Arthur Sterling, the founding titan of Sterling Global, whose health had supposedly rendered him bedridden for months. Arthur walked with a cane, his eyes sharp as flint, ignoring his son entirely. He extended a gloved hand toward Rebecca, a gesture of absolute validation that sent a cold shudder through the crowd. Julian’s champagne glass trembled, the golden liquid sloshing over the delicate crystal rim. He had spent three agonizing years tearing apart Rebecca’s division, restructuring her contracts, and convincing the board of directors that she was a liability to the corporate ecosystem. Now, standing beneath the crystal chandeliers of Manhattan’s most exclusive gala, he realized the entire board had played him for a fool.

"Father, this is madness," Julian whispered, his voice cracking slightly despite his desperate attempts to maintain composure. "She abandoned her duties. She walked away from the merger."

"She didn't walk away, Julian. She was pushed," Arthur replied, his voice a gravelly baritone that commanded immediate silence across the massive hall. "And you were all too eager to inherit a kingdom built on sand."

Security guards hesitated, looking back and forth between Julian’s frantic expression and Arthur’s intimidating glare. They took a collective step backward, dissolving into the background like ghosts. Rebecca took a slow step forward, her black slip dress catching the amber light of the chandeliers. She looked not at Arthur, but directly at Julian, her gaze piercing through his rehearsed charm. She knew every secret buried within the Sterling archives, including the offshore accounts Julian believed he had successfully scrubbed clean last Tuesday.

"You left a paper trail in the Cayman Islands, Julian," Rebecca said softly, loud enough only for him to hear. "Accounting errors are so terribly sloppy."

Julian felt the blood drain from his face as a heavy envelope dropped onto the floor by his feet.
