Chapter 9 - Reunited in the Shadows

The delivery truck bounced roughly over potholes as it sped away from the federal correctional facility, leaving the screaming red sirens far behind in the misty darkness. In the cramped, damp interior of the cargo hold, surrounded by mountains of institutional linens, Genevieve lay catching her breath. The heavy dark blue coat was stained with dust and oil, but she felt an electric, surging adrenaline unlike anything she had ever experienced.

The truck ground to a sudden halt, the brakes hissing loudly. The rear roll-up door was violently yanked upward, letting in a flood of cold, sodium-lit alleyway rain.

Marcus Vance stood in the opening, holding a large black umbrella and a dry change of civilian clothes—a dark wool sweater and heavy denim jeans.

"Out of the laundry, inmate," Marcus said quietly, his voice deadpan, though a slight, approving smirk played at the corner of his lips. "We’ve got twenty minutes before the federal marshals realize the warden's office security feed was looped."

Genevieve stood up stiffly, sliding off the dust-covered dark blue coat and folding it carefully before setting it aside. She stepped out of the truck into the rain-slicked alley behind an abandoned warehouse in downtown Brooklyn. The neon signs of the city flickered through the heavy downpour, casting long, distorted shadows across the pavement.

"Where is my father?" Genevieve asked immediately, pulling the dry sweater over her head and shivering slightly against the biting wind.

"He's already at the safehouse upstate," Marcus replied, handing her a warm thermos of black coffee. "He intercepted Chloe’s bank records an hour before the raid. Her uncle—Senator Sterling—is flying in from Washington tonight to bail her out before she faces a grand jury."

Genevieve took a slow sip of the coffee, letting the heat burn away the lingering chill of the cell block. "A senator. That’s why Julian was so arrogant. They thought political immunity would shield them from federal wire fraud."

"Immunity only works if the public doesn't know what crimes you're committing," Marcus countered, unlocking the passenger door of an unmarked black sedan parked nearby. "Get in. We’re going to intercept Senator Sterling’s private transport before he reaches the precinct."

As Genevieve slid into the warm leather passenger seat, Marcus handed her the unmonitored burner phone her father had given her. The screen instantly lit up with a live GPS tracking beacon and an encrypted video feed from a micro-camera hidden inside Julian Vance’s holding cell.

Genevieve stared at the screen in absolute shock. In the tiny video feed, Julian was no longer sitting alone in the interrogation room. Sitting directly across from him, speaking in hushed, furious tones, was none other than Senator Sterling himself—and he wasn't there to offer legal representation. He was sliding a sleek, black ceramic vial across the table.
